32 Lake St. Louis tennis enthusiasts celebrated the end of a fun, active and cooler-than-normal summer in the Mixed Doubles Compass Draw tennis tournament held from 9:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, August 30, 2003 at the Lake St. Louis Community Association tennis court complex. Clouds, mild breezes and temperatures around 80ºF made for an enjoyable and competitive day of tennis.
This event was the third of five qualifying events for the Lake St. Louis/Whitmoor Challenge Cup Team Tennis event to be held this fall on October 11, 2003. Participants earned points that will be used to determine the team that will compete against Whitmoor Country Club for the Challenge Cup trophy.
Dr. Matt Kirks, local optometrist operating Kirks Eye Center, sponsored this popular half-day tournament as well as participated in the Lake St. Louis Triathlon held the same day. In addition to routine eye exams, Dr. Kirks also treats eye diseases, eye injuries and coordinates refractive surgery.
The day began with warm-ups commencing around 8:30 a.m. and play beginning at 9:00 a.m. 16 Teams played four rounds of one-set matches that sent them to one of eight final round matches in the compass. 32 matches and 264 games were completed in about five hours. Lunch and refreshments along with trophy presentations and gift give-aways concluded the day’s activities.
