Labor Day Tournament Draws Crowd of 1000!

From all accounts, it appears that close to 1000 spectators converged on the Lake St. Louis CA tennis courts on Saturday, September 4, 2004 to watch the top 12 mixed doubles tennis teams compete in the 6th annual Compass Draw tennis tournament. Evidently, this tournament has gotten so popular that several groups swam, biked and ran over to see the action.

As promised, all participants and spectators were richly rewarded with the chance to see tennis professionals Andy Roddick, Maria Sharapova, Roger Federer, Justine Henin-Hardenne, and Lleyton Hewitt in photos as they viewed the draw sheet.

Twelve mixed doubles teams competed in excellent, sunny, mid 70-degree weather, playing four, one set matches en route to one of the final matches. First place champions in the East division, Cindy Chu and Chris Canfield, defeated runner-ups Pat Hacker and Whitney Pearce 6-4 to capture the championship trophies.

This was the third of five events that earn points to qualify for the Lake St. Louis/Whitmoor Challenge Cup Team Tennis event to be held in October. The current point rankings have been updated and can be viewed on this website.
