Labor Day Tournament Draws Large Crowd
Lake St. Louis Tennis has gotten so popular that hundreds of individuals swam, biked and ran over to see the action at the Labor Day Compass Draw Tennis Tournament on Saturday, September 3, 2005.
From all accounts, it appears that close to 1000 individuals from all over the United States and at least two other countries converged on the Community Association Clubhouse on Saturday morning to watch tennis. As an added bonus, a triathlon was also held for many of the spectators.
14 mixed doubles teams competed in excellent, sunny, 70/80 degree weather, playing four, one set matches en route to one of the final matches. First place champions in the East division, Lisa Rutherford and Al Clark, defeated runner-ups Julie Gordon and Curt Juergens in another close finals match to capture the championship trophies. This is the third time these teams have met in the finals of a tournament this year, keeping their rivalry going strong. After Julie and Curt grabbed an early 4-2 lead, Lisa and Al came from behind to win the set and tournament 6-4.
